unit 4: celebrations Reflection
Unit 4 was focused on celebrations. I learned that celebrations can be almost anything. As stated in Pink (2006) "It [symphony] is the capacity to synthesize rather than to analyze; to see relationships between seemingly unrelated fields," (p. 130). For Nick cave it was his sound suits and celebrating dance, for Norman Rockwell it was his paintings and celebrating the overlooked, and finally for Miriam Shapiro it was her paintings and sculptures that celebrated women. The overall take away from this unit was Celebrations convey personal, social, and cultural meanings that reveal what people value. In Pink (2005), the Dalai Lama says, “I believe the very purpose of our life is to seek happiness. That much is clear. Whether one believes in religion or not, whether one believes in this religion or that religion, we are all seeking something better in life. So I think that very motion of our life is towards happiness” (p.220). In this unit we focused on what each of us values and what makes us happy and that in itself is a beautiful celebration.
The first studio was inspired by Nick cave and his sound suits. We created finger puppets that celebrates something about ourselves. A big part of my life that I regularly celebrate is the fact I get to play division I softball, so I chose to represent this celebration as a mouse with a piece of cheese. A mouse works so hard for so long to get the piece of cheese and once he finally gets to enjoy the cheese he feels great accomplishment. I am the mouse and my piece of cheese is softball, and being able to play at this level is my great accomplishment that I decided to celebrate.
The second studio was inspired by Norman Rockwell and his optimistic paintings of overlooked America. We created a Graphic design page celebrating 21’st Century America. On my page I chose to celebrate college life. The picture I chose as my background was my team gathering together to play a pickup game in the middle of the night under the lights. I thought this image really captured the essence of enjoying life and the college student mentality of having it all. The lyrics I chose were from Kesha and Drake, and they basically posed the attitude of always enjoying life and celebrating everything in it.
The third studio was inspired by Miriam Shapiro and her feminist paintings and sculptures. This project was artist choice, and I decided to make a digital slide show celebrating Red Block. I chose to celebrate red block because we have spent so much time together this semester. We have been through struggles and triumphs that really made us come together as a unit. On the last picture I put a quote, “The only way to do good work is to love what you do.” I thought this quote was perfect because we all have a common goal of inspiring and educating children and we all are very passionate about it. This really brought the slide slow of celebrating red block together because it really emphasizes what we as a class value and what we are celebrating.
I really enjoyed this unit and I think this quote is perfectly stated by Pink (2006), "The most creative among us see relations the rest of us never notice" (p. 135). There are so many celebrations that go on around us that many people don’t know about or don’t understand. I would love to use this unit in my own class room so that my students have the chance to celebrate what they value.
